HBI's expert research team has extensive experience in conducting large-scale health outcome and healthcare utilization studies, including analyses of retrospective claims data and survey data, as well as patient registries. This research expertise spans many therapeutic areas to provide actionable information to a wide cross-section of the healthcare community.

HBI’s comprehensive approach to life sciences research projects builds upon our service-bureau model and includes: study protocol development, securing administrative approvals (e.g., IRB, HIPAA compliance), data management, method advancement, sophisticated statistical analysis, survey development, overall study management and administration, and the preparation of internal and external communications and detailed reports. Finally, HBI brings over 15 years of experience in the dissemination of research findings to maximize client return on research investment through publication in leading peer-reviewed academic journals as well as participation at leading national and international scientific conferences.

HBI has the knowledge to assist clients in identifying and implementing the appropriate analyses to meet their research objectives. Below please see a list of our products and services in the life sciences industry:

Health Services Research & Analysis

  • Prospective Patient Registries: real-world studies for collecting prospective patient- and provider-reported data.

  • Retrospective Database Studies: studies designed to assess unique differences in health outcomes or level of resource utilization between groups of interest.

  • Dissemination strategy: targeted effort to highlight results to key audiences including presentations at leading academic conferences and publications in peer-reviewed literature.

Patient Registry Network

Providing Access to Real-world Clinical Data
HBI offers its Clinical Recruitment Network services to clients who want to design real-world patient registry research. The Clinical Recruitment Network (CRN) is a multi-regional network of over 400 physicians across primary care and specialties that work with (HBI) to recruit patients for post-marketing, IRB-approved research.

The CRN can be used to validate results from initial clinical trials by offering real-world, highly generalizable data. This information is necessary for many life sciences agents and medical devices to meet FDA-required safety tracking and show value to health care purchasers.

How the Studies Performed With the CRN Are Different From Randomized Clinical Trials:

  • Comparisons of real-world efficacy of different treatments are provided, to complement experimental results generated from a tightly controlled environment.
  • Broad eligibility criteria and minimal protocol restrictions are employed.
  • Multiple interim data analyses are performed to measure intermediate and final outcomes such as therapy switching, augmentation and discontinuation, patient satisfaction, symptoms, productivity losses, healthcare costs, hospitalizations, quality of life and more.
Prospective data collected from physicians, patients, or secondary sources (eg, medical charts) could be linked to administrative databases to study healthcare cost and utilization

Retrospective Database Studies

Analyzing Product Effectiveness and Appropriateness
HBI conducts retrospective database studies that are designed to assess the efficacy, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of products in a real-world environment. HBI’s studies have been used to provide information on effectiveness of a patient care quality intervention, disease burden of illness, economic burden, patient characteristics, current physician treatment patterns, as well as comparative assessments of patient outcomes with available therapies.

HBI's research is supported using our industry-leading, proprietary database of public and private payer health care data covering over 40 million patient lives nationwide with history ranging from 3-6 years.

HBI Quantitative Research
HBI offers its quantitative research services to clients throughout the health care industry who require advanced knowledge and practice in applied health services research methods. HBI's strength in sophisticated methodology and statistical techniques is supported by the work of a highly skilled team of professional health services researchers, statisticians, and programmers as well as the Clinical Advisory Group. HBI's clients also benefit from HBI's partnerships with leading academic institutions across the US, including the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy and the UCLA School of Public Health.
Types of Analyses Available to Clients
HBI has wide experience in the most current research methods to address common issues in health services research and also the business knowledge to assist clients in selecting and implementing the appropriate analyses to meet business objectives. The following techniques represent a sample of HBI's analytic capabilities:
Patient risk-adjustment methods and selection bias correction:

  • Matching in a cohort study
  • Propensity scores
  • Instrumental variables
  • Heckman two-stage selection bias models
  • Regression models for risk-adjustment
Model Development:
  • Linear models and generalized linear models
  • Hierarchical linear and generalized linear models
  • Bayesian statistical analysis
  • Conditional independent multivariate analyses
  • Principal components analysis and factor analysis
  • Censored or truncated regression models
  • Time-to-event survival models
  • Regression models for categorical dependent variables
